A Brief Intro to Girly Kei

My favorite fashion style is Girly Kei! Here, I want to give a little overview of what Girly Kei is, and eventually, share some of my own looks!

What is Girly Kei?

Girly Kei is a fashion style from Japan that focuses on cute, super femme styles with lots of use of frills, lace, and pastels (though darker, gothic-influenced looks are popular too, in sub-styles like Dark Girly). Typically, you see fluffy skirts and dresses, lacy tops with ribbons, cute shoes and boots, and similarly cute accessories.

Girly Kei has a number of sub-styles that reflect different takes on the look, such as the aforementioned Dark Girly, Retro Girly, French Girly, and Casual Girly.

My Girly Kei Story

As somebody who didn't figure herself out for a long time - including my fashion sense - I never had much of a "look" that I felt really fit me. When, as an adult, I finally got into anime, I saw a post on Tumblr of Kotori Minami from Love Live in what was identified as a Girly Kei outfit, which led me to the source blog, which shared Girly Kei inspiration images and educational posts. That blog, Girly Kei Tips, opened the door for me. I was especially inspried by their posts talking about Girly Kei being inclusive of all kinds of people and body types.

Thanks to that blog, I found sources for Girly Kei outfits in Japanese plus sizes. It turned out that I, a girl of some height and size, fit into Japanese plus sizing, so I was able to get my hands on authentic Girly Kei pieces from Tokyo shops.

I am by no means an expert. I'm just an enthusiast who finds that Girly Kei fits my personality, and the silhouettes and aesthetic of the outfits fit how I want to present myself. I've bought pieces mainly from DearMyLoveWhip and AngeLSize so far, and I plan to get more looks as I get some more storage space! I'm especially interested in exploring Dark Girly.

Here's a photo of one of my looks, featuring a DearMyLoveWhip suspender skirt!

This page is a work-in-progress, and I'm going to update it as I learn more about the style and its sub-styles, and grow my own wardrobe!
